Kids are the future.

There’s no two ways about it.

Let’s make a change.

When I lived in the traditional desert schools, or 'mahdharas', in Mauritania, the notion of freedom wasn't just an idea—it was our reality. The kids in our community were wrapped in the vastness of the desert and the rhythm of village life. We poured over our books in the early mornings and nights, and as the sun climbed and fell, our days opened up like a blank canvas, waiting to be painted with our adventures.

We shepherded animals, scaling and conquering the mountains that rose from the sands. There were bickers and debates, squabbles that matured us quicker than time alone ever could. We made trips to the shop, created towering bonfires under the stars, and hosted lunches that still linger in my memory.

But, you see, all this exploration, all this freedom—it was carefully contained within the wisdom and watchfulness of our community. The older, seasoned students, with their knowledge and understanding, took the younger ones under their wings. We were free, but safely so—navigating our day-to-day adventures with their guidance and returning safely each evening.

I find myself missing that environment—the delicate balance of freedom and structure, learning and exploration, community and individuality. I long to replicate that here, to give our kids the same rich, multifaceted experience. It's true; we don't live in a desert village. We can't provide the same backdrop of sand dunes and open skies, but we can recreate the essence of it.

That connection to nature, the simple act of learning surrounded by the serenity of the outdoors—it has transformative power. There's something about nature that makes the mind more receptive, more curious. Maybe it's the tranquillity, the open spaces that leave room for open thinking. Perhaps it's the constant interaction with a world beyond books that creates a dynamic learning experience, blending knowledge and life lessons.

Whatever it is, studies show that natural environments can significantly enhance children's cognitive abilities, creativity, and emotional and physical health. We may not have a desert, but we can certainly provide green spaces, outdoor classrooms, and an education that embraces the world outside as much as the wisdom in our books. Let's foster an environment where learning and growth aren't confined to four walls—where the air, the earth, and the sky become part of our children's education.

Can you imagine it? A place where kids aren't just taught but are inspired to learn. That's the environment we aim to create, a little oasis of knowledge in our corner of the world.
